Venue info: In 1964 High Hall opens. An 18-storey hall of residence for male students. In the 1970s and 80s the main hall regularly attracts big names to the campus. It’s here on May 2, 1980 Joy Division plays their last ever concert. During the show frontman Ian Curtis stumbles and is helped off stage while the rest of the band plays on. He recovers enough to return for an encore. Sadly the world loses Ian Curtis on May 18, 1980, just two days before their first US tour. The following month ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ is released – the single becomes Joy Division’s first chart hit.
The student block stood empty for several years failing a fire safety inspection and was demolished in 2014.
