Venue info: The Marquee Club first opened in 1958 and closed in 1996. It had three location in London in its time. The most famous period was the one in Soho from 1964 to 1988, where every big name in rock history played the venue.
On July 12, 1962, at the Marquee Club’s first location, was the first-ever live performance by The Rolling Stones.
It was also here a long time regular, David Jones, premiered his new stage name; David Bowie in October of 1965.
And in 1966 Pink Floyd found their psychedelic sound as regulars at the Sunday happenings called ‘The Spontaneous Underground’ held here.
The Marquee Club finally closed after an 8 year run, at Charing Cross Road, in 1996. The Soho building is now apartments and still stands today – honored with a Keith Moon plaque.
